What’s the Difference Between Solid Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood?

Solid hardwood floors are made of planks carved directly from the parent trees, and are typically ¾” thick.  Solid hardwood floors are a fantastic choice because they last the longest; with proper care, a solid hardwood floor can last up to 100 years or more.  They have the highest value and will have the most positive effect on the resale value of your home.

Engineered hardwood is composed of 4-5 layers of wood that are tightly compressed on top of one another with the grains going in different directions, with a veneer of fine hardwood on top.  This adds to the stability of the wood, which makes engineered hardwood ultra-durable and less likely to warp over time.  However, engineered hardwood is not as thick as solid hardwood floors, and may not stand up as well to multiple refinishings.

What Should I Consider When Purchasing Hardwood Flooring?

There are a few different factors to keep in mind when you’re getting ready for a hardwood floors installation, the most important being your budget.  We offer a wide range of materials so that you can find flooring that fits your vision without burning through all of your savings.

Secondly, you want to consider your durability and design needs.  A solid hardwood floor will tend to last longer and be more amenable to future refinishing than an engineered wood floor, though engineered wood tends to be more durable and less likely to warp/shrink/ expand with changing temperatures or humidity.  The type of sub-floor your home has and the location of where you’re putting in new floors will play a part in this as well.  If you’re uncertain about what material would be best, don’t fret; our experts are more than happy to offer suggestions during a free in-home estimate!
